Studio City & Sherman Oaks Gastropub Guide
Ventura Boulevard is quickly establishing itself as a gastropub haven in the Los Angeles area. What does this mean for local residents? More delicious food, more delicious beer and more local businesses. We did some research to make you this guide on the Studio City and Sherman Oaks Gastropub Culture!
What are gastropubs?
These local restaurants have been popping up all over Los Angeles over the past couple years. So, what exactly are they? Gastropubs are a harmonious union between great pub fare (shareable snacks) and tasty drinks. The Gastropub culture prides itself on local ingredients, local brewers and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Studio City & Sherman Oaks Gastropub Guide
Laurel Tavern
12pm – 1am Everyday
11938 Ventura Blvd. Studio City
First up on the digital tour, Laurel Tavern! Laurel Tavern, located just East of Laurel Canyon Blvd, is an American style gastropub with 16 craft beers on tap and mighty burgers carefully paired with artisanal drinks. The trick to dining at Laurel Tavern is to go during the week… for lunch. On the weekends the line can be out the door with indoor seating nonexistent. During the week however, the relaxed atmosphere and delicious food make Laurel Tavern a regular destination.
Black Market Liquor Bar

Black Market exudes taste inside their cozy, stone clad walls. The big windowed Tuning Fork hosts live music, craft beer and farm to fork cuisine. The local hotspot has been gaining traction among local blogs, restaurant connoisseurs and Ventura residents. Maybe it’s the “California craft beer, family produced wines and seasonal comfort foods,” as they put it. Or maybe it’s the unique neighborhood, growing culture and local vibes found inside this Studio City hotspot.
Local Peasant

The Local Peasant, a sister restaurant of the Black Market, has joined Studio City’s “most elite” in the gastropub culture. The space features long communal tables and big chalk boards that set the hardy and friendly mood. While dining there be proud to support the “Eat, Drink, Be Local” movement spreading through Studio City and Sherman Oaks.

From the leather-bound bar stools to the beer garden tables, Downtown Johnny's features stand out cocktails like the Sideline (spiced rum, ginger syrup, lime and apple cider float). Not too bad, especially once you consider the American pub fares on the menu, like crisp pork belly with polenta and braised short rib. The open floor plan and spacious seating makes Downtown Johnnies the perfect place for groups and couples alike.
